August 22nd: Guess Who?

August 22nd.

Elder Heilmann wasn't able to call on the 19th and I think it was the first time I cried for missing my beautiful son.  Being able to talk to him regularly really helped stave off the sadness.  But it came crashing in when I missed his weekly call.  And then....a tender mercy.

My sister, Emily, sent me this picture with the most amazing story.

"Guess who's in our Ward?"

The Elders were invited over for dinner to this members home the evening of August 22nd.  The Elders live around the corner and down the street from this family so it was an easy walk. The group talked about homeschooling and then the Elder's asked where are all the places the family had lived before.  All the while, Elder Heilmann is thinking, "Why do these people look so familiar to me?"  The family mentioned they had most recently moved from Richmond, Virginia and so naturally Elder Heilmann asked "Do you know the Chacon's and they immediately yelled, YES!!! We were in the same ward in Richmond!"

They laughed and laughed and took this great picture and sent it to my sister, Emily Chacon.  It was EXACTLY what I needed.  Friends of my sisters, who live in Germany, feeding my son and sharing laughter and love.

What a tender mercy.

Day 1: First Day in Germany

Elder Heilmann has arrived and is ready to go!  I will be brief in my comments since I included portions of the first email from his Mission President. We are all so excited for Julian....Elder Heilmann...he looks nervous and excited.  Can't wait to hear from him soon.   Reminder: If you want to be included in the group email from Elder Heilmann, let me know.   Dear  Brother & Sister Heilmann ,    We are happy to report that  Elder   Heilmann   arrived safely in the Germany Frankfurt Mission. Sister Hammon and I met all the new missionaries at the Frankfurt airport, and your  son   looked good and was happy to be here. We are always grateful to have new missionaries come into the field as they bring a sense of excitement and a spirit of great faith. It inspires and energizes the whole mission.  Later, Sister Hammon and I both spent some time getting acquainted with your  son . I also took a few min...

August 12th: Some Fun Tales From the Mission

The last post was heavy!  Let's face it.  Last WEEK was heavy for Elder Heilmann.  But, in the midst of it all, he was able to share some fun little quips here and there.       On one of the first days of serving in Ahrweiler, Elder Heilmann was given a granola bar from the Government agency that was there to help feed the village and volunteers.    He realized that it had a peanut in it after he started eating it.  He didn't realize that the German word for peanut is "earth nut" or erdnuss.  He went back to the food tent and did his best to tell the agent that he had a peanut allergy so the agent gave him an entire tub of Haribo gummy snakes instead.  He got such a kick out of that!       Speaking of food he is really enjoying the cuisine in Germany but has really limited his consumption of meat.  It was making him feel a bit ill.  So instead, he is eating a lot of soups, breads...

October 21: Wokin' 0900 to 1700

Missionary Work Another glorious week in the work of the Lord, another chance to talk to my sweet boy! This week was better than last week, but he's still missing home. It's just hard being in a foreign country, trying to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who don't want to hear it. They aren't always kind about their refusals, and it can really wear on his tender heart. He said, "Whenever I get emotionally strong, I get yelled at. 'Hey, I want to talk to you about Jesus!' 'Hey, you're a Satanist! You should kill yourself!' People don't like the Mormons here much. If American's see us, they say, 'I thought we escaped you.' 'Nope, we're everywhere!" It's disheartening and sad, but he perseveres with the Lord's help and support.  I inquired after his friends (the term they use for investigators of the Church), and he told me the texting girl blocked the missionaries. She was afraid they were going to hur...
