September 9: Meeting a General Authority

Elder Heilmann and I had a bit of a quick chat today, but he had a surprise ready for me.  He is taking the suggestion of showing us more 'life in Germany' to heart and had coins and bills ready to share with me.  He showed me 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 20 cents, 10 cents, and 50 cent coins. He also showed me coins for 1 Euro and 2 Euros. Also a 10 Euro bill.  It is very colorful.  I didn't know this, but Euros are used all over the European Union and each country mints its own coins with National symbols on the back.  I just thought that was so cool!!

Elder Heilmann also told me about his experience with the Gas Heizer or the boiler service tech. The Elders had to go open the Church for the technician.  Elder Heilmann said he was very jolly and it was a fun experience.  There are radiators all over the Church for heating.  Again, no AC. ;)

The true highlight of the week was the visit from Elder Bednar.  Elder Heilmann said he is so funny and really witty.  He also said he felt extra cool because they are both called Elder.  He said, "We have the same job!  He doesn't have a badge though, so he's not as cool as me."  He's so funny.

Elder Bednars' topic was 'faith courage'.  He had previously sent the Mission 4 talks and had asked that all the missionaries read them and be prepared to ask questions.  Elder Heilman said, "The whole discussion was mostly us talking because that's how you teach.  You ask questions and then when they act they're edified.  So, it was a lot of us talking."  He also said that he thought Sister Bednar was very shy.  He loved that she came and she spoke anyway even though it looked like it was really hard for her to do.  Elder Cook, from the General 70, and Elder Kopischke were also there.  A family friend of ours, Sherry Henry Kopishke, is married to his son so that was fun to share with Elder Heilmann.  They ended the session with a group picture with Elder Bednar.  Overall, a fabulous and uplifting experience.

We ended the call talking about food adventures, of course. He got to to to the Commissary today and he bought Vienna Sausages.  He said, "...because they taste like feet but I like them."

Words to live by...  ;)

Day 1: First Day in Germany

Elder Heilmann has arrived and is ready to go!  I will be brief in my comments since I included portions of the first email from his Mission President. We are all so excited for Julian....Elder Heilmann...he looks nervous and excited.  Can't wait to hear from him soon.   Reminder: If you want to be included in the group email from Elder Heilmann, let me know.   Dear  Brother & Sister Heilmann ,    We are happy to report that  Elder   Heilmann   arrived safely in the Germany Frankfurt Mission. Sister Hammon and I met all the new missionaries at the Frankfurt airport, and your  son   looked good and was happy to be here. We are always grateful to have new missionaries come into the field as they bring a sense of excitement and a spirit of great faith. It inspires and energizes the whole mission.  Later, Sister Hammon and I both spent some time getting acquainted with your  son . I also took a few min...

November 11th: Herne, Herne, Herne...You'll Thank Me Later

Daily Doings Elder Heilmann cut his own hair!  He bought the clippers and did it.  It's a good buzz.  He feels pretty proud of himself. I am too. What a cutie! The Elders were planning on going to a museum today, but Elder Heilmann had a bad headache, so he couldn't make it. He seems down in the dumps, actually, but he says it's just his headache. So, hopefully, that's all it is.  They did end up going on a hike, though, before the headache set it. They went to Neroberg . Elder Heilmann says that this part of Germany is very Roman, hence the name of the hiking area; Nero's Mountain.  It was a foggy hike.  It really reminded him of Washington fog.  In fact, most of the weather he has experienced has been very much like the Pacific NW.  Not my personal favorite weather pattern, and apparently not the German's favorite either.  They call these conditions nass Wetter.  It literally means 'wet weather' but has the negative connotation of bein...

November 18th: Change. Change Always Weakens Me

Daily Doings I honestly wished that I could say that this week all was well and that Elder Heilmann has adjusted and is doing better. Unfortunately, that was not the case today. I saw my sweet son, and his light was definitely dimmed. He just got transferred to a new area, so he has a new companion, a new town, a new Ward, new apartment. Everything is new.  He just has never been great at handling change. It just takes time to adjust. He knows he will, in time. I just pray that not every transfer is this traumatizing.  Elder Heilmann expressed that his transfer experience was painful. He had a lot of time alone as he tried to get around Germany. He had two giant suitcases and had to walk up multiple sets of stairs to get to the rails. Elder Chamberlain's new companion showed up, and the two of them had to leave for their area. Elder Heilmann had to continue on his own to Krefeld, where his new companion would meet him at the train station and take him to his new apartment....
